Zac Hurren, 31, from Brisbane was awarded first prize in the 2009 National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz. In second place was Phil Noy from Melbourne and third, Jacam Manricks who currently lives in New York.
Zac received $6000 prize money plus a studio recording session for 'Jazztrack with Mal Stanley' on ABC Classic FM and an invitation to perform in the Stonnington Jazz Festival in May 2010.
Phil Noy was awarded $3000 prize money and Jacam Manricks won $1500.
The National Jazz Awards have been staged annually at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival since 1990 and feature a different instrument each year. In 2009 the Awards and featured saxophone.
The 2009 Awards attracted a record number of entries, received from around Australia, and from the USA, the UK, Japan, China and New Zealand.
Judges this year were Sydney pianist Mike Nock, Melbourne saxophonist Julien Wilson and Perth saxophonist Jamie Oehlers.
