Solid Air - A Tribute To Nick DrakeThe Vanguard is home to independent music in Newtown, Sydney. The ethos of its modus operandi is about supporting the arts in its many and varied forms without convention or pretension. Hence why this small theatre proudly showcases events such as Solid Air – A Tribute to Nick Drake. The inspiration fuelling this performance was to pay homage to the late, and in only recent times seen as great, singer, songwriter and musician Nick Drake.

The music of Nick Drake could be described as being soulful, indie folk with blues overtones, and is enjoying a posthumous renaissance. Drake himself did not get the recognition that he deserved prior to his early death at the age of 27. Solid Air is a collaborative effort by a group of talented local musicians, each playing three (or so) of the Nick Drake songs that tickled their sonic fancy. Last night’s tribute had the feeling of being a homespun affair which was appropriate considering the humble nature of Drake’s musical career.

Matt Ralph (who was also the host for the evening), Mick Hart, Christopher Burns, Cass Smiles and Chris Gillespie were amongst the Drake devotees playing their respect to some of music’s finest songs. The standouts for the evening were James Edgar Francis with his angelic vocals and Leroy Lee who illustrated for the audience the intricacy and uniqueness of Nick Drake’s guitar picking style. Solid Air was more an appreciation of Nick Drake than a tribute due to the finesse of the music presented onstage. Each artist endowed Drakes songs with their own identity, which was what made Solid Air a truly memorable show.
