Melbourne Fringe is thrilled to announce the new look Fringe Hub and Fringe Club. In 2009 North Melbourne will be overflowing with new performance and exhibition spaces, new work and new artists.
The Fringe Hub is a fabulous collection of performance spaces in and around the North Melbourne Town Hall and in 2009 it will be bigger and better than ever before. From over 135 artist applications, Melbourne Fringe has selected 51 shows to present in the Fringe Hub. These stunning works represent the newest, most entertaining, unexpected and sophisticated arts practice. The calibre, scope and scale of work presented in the Fringe Hub this year will wow Melbourne audiences and consolidate the Fringe Hub’s position as the true heartland of independent arts in Melbourne.
At the centre of the Hub is the Fringe Club – the place where the Melbourne arts community and Fringe audience gather, chat, laugh, explore, debate and celebrate the diversity of our artistic city. It is a rare chance for such a broad spectrum of people to meet, exchange details, ideas, experiences, advice and opportunities. It is also a place for entertainment and celebration. Each night Melbourne Fringe serves up a spectacular feast of FREE entertainment. Starring a diverse range of artists - from experimental music to circus, comedy to burlesque and everything in between - the Fringe Club will once again see audiences queuing out the door.
Growing demand from Melbourne’s burgeoning circus community has been met by the development of the Melbourne Fringe Circus Hub in the Arts House Meat Market. Just around the corner from our traditional Fringe Hub at the North Melbourne Town Hall, the Fringe Circus Hub will be THE place for circus lovers, young and old.
In 2009 Melbourne Fringe’s iconic design exhibition, Fringe Furniture moves to the Meat Market. The Meat Market’s rich art and craft history make it the perfect backdrop for this cutting edge celebration of the newest and most innovative design works in Australia.
Melbourne Fringe’s commitment to a festival that incorporates both uncurated and curated programs, plus the supportive structure provided through the Fringe Hub and Club, make the Melbourne Fringe Festival the perfect event for independent artists to present experimental, innovative and provocative new work. And that, in turn, guarantees that the Melbourne Fringe delivers thrilling new experiences to our arts-hungry audience.
The Melbourne Fringe Festival program will be launched on Tuesday 1 September.
Melbourne Fringe runs from 23 September to 11 October 2009.
