Watching people think on their feet is exciting and entertaining, even when the outcome is less than inspired (sometimes that is more entertaining).
The Celebrity Theatresports line-up included Rebecca DeUnamuno, Kevin Harrington, and Nikki Parry, with Impro Melbourne ensemble members, Simon Dowling, Jamie Robertson, and Jenny Lovell, and host Andrew Bayly. The inventive energy and imagination of the cast was thrilling to watch as they challenged each other to improvisation duels. Highlights included DeUnamuno as the Marilyn Monroe doll in a film noir about an investigation regarding the disappearance of an iron, a collection of plastic surgery hit songs (including ‘They Don’t Bounce’ and ‘Lift and Separate’ accompanied by the brilliant Gep Blake on keyboard and sound effects), and a Shakespeare to Bogan Harrington scratching himself with a lamp.
The creative juices were flowing not only on stage, but also in the auditorium. A buzz of enjoyment filled the theatre, with audience members high on the sugar of the lolly giveaway which occurred after each match (those lolly throwers have the best job in the world, beaming as they flung lollies at wild waving audience members). The answer to the question ‘What’s a big problem?’ effected a moment of perfect comic timing, as a bellow from the back of the auditorium suggested –‘DIAHORREA!’ – and one of the prop stage hands entered with a toilet seat.
As the Theatresports anthem proclaims, Theatresports is quite possibly the best game in the world, and definitely the funniest.
