Victorian Opera Chairman Michael Roux has announced that senior arts executive Lucy Shorrocks has been appointed the company’s Managing Director.

Lucy Shorrocks was part of the team that transformed the Welsh National Opera from a company of similar size to Victorian Opera into a significant touring opera company that is highly regarded around the world. She has been Director of Marketing and Sponsorship of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival since she moved to Australia over twelve months ago. Previously she has also run her own marketing and media relations company in Glasgow, been Director of Marketing and Development with the Scottish National Ballet, and held marketing roles with the Oxford Stage Company and English National Ballet among others.

“Lucy’s work with the Welsh National Opera made her the stand-out candidate in a very strong field,” said Michael Roux. “Like the WNO, Victorian Opera has a wide-ranging charter to stimulate, to educate, to develop new works and to develop new audiences, and Lucy’s success in developing audiences for the WNO fits perfectly with the Board’s vision for Victorian Opera. Her energy, passion and commitment shone through throughout the selection process, and she will match the energy and interests of our Music Director Richard Gill as we move into our next stage of development,” said Mr Roux.

“Lucy Shorrocks will join the company in early 2009. The Board is grateful that experienced arts professional Mary Vallentine was able to step into the role in the last few months and assist with the search for the new Managing Director,” he continued.

Victorian Opera was established in 2006 as an initiative of the Victorian Government to bring professional opera to audiences in Melbourne and regional Victoria. Committed to celebrating the power of the voice, VO is distinctive, differentiating itself from other professional Australian companies on a number of dimensions, including presenting traditional and new repertoire in  innovative productions at a variety of venues; increasing accessibility through regional touring and education; reaching wide audiences through affordable ticket prices; and collaborating with performing arts companies and training institutions to reach new audiences and develop new opera professionals.
