Last Friday evening 13 June, sixteen year old Australian National Academy of Music pianist Max Foster won the ABC Symphony Australia Stage 111 Young Performer of the Year Keyboard final.

Max won the final with his performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Queensland Orchestra conducted by Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen.
 
Max won $5,000 and the opportunity to perform in the grand final which takes place on Friday 19 September in Hamer Hall with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He is also the recipient of the $25,000 David Paul Landa Scholarship, administered by Musica Viva. 

Max Foster is a member of the Young Academy of the Australian National Academy of Music. He is student of ANAM Artist-in-residence Rita Reichman. Reichman who was at the competition along with the Academy's Chairman John Haddad reported that the judges commented that with 'Max's performance, both artistically and musically the choice was most obvious choice'

The Grand Final winner receives a $20,000 cash prize, a professionally produced CD of the winning performance, the Sir Charles Moses Trophy, concert engagements with major Australian symphony orchestras and their own recital at the Sydney Opera House’s Utzon Room.

Established in 1994, The Australian National Academy of Music is Australia’s national centre for performance excellence for Australian classical musicians. ANAM is a joint venture of the Commonwealth Government and Victorian Governments and is a subsidiary company of the University of Melbourne. Commonwealth funding is provided through the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.
