Terrapin Puppet Theatre’s production Explosion Therapy is touring to China next month.

Terrapin has been invited to perform the show in the Shanghai International Children’s Theatre Festival, and then take the show on to the city of Nanjing.

Explosion Therapy premiered in Hobart in January, and subsequently toured to Perth in April where it was part of the World Puppetry Congress and Festival. Explosion Therapy has been recognised nationally and now internationally as a genuinely innovative production pioneering new techniques in digital puppetry.

The show is an intoxicating world where the characters leap between a film screen and the stage, as though the two spaces are one. It borrows from the world of cartoons, and vaudeville. Objects and puppets emerge from the most unlikely places as the entire theatre comes alive.

Explosion Therapy is a like a live cartoon. The interaction between the film and the stage is unique and captivating to watch. Audiences laugh but are moved by the poignant end scenes and are amazed at how the visual world is created.

Terrapin’s Artistic Director, Frank Newman, said “the Shanghai International Children’s Theatre Festival takes place over a month and features some of the best performances from eight countries including Sweden, Poland, Serbia and the USA. Terrapin is delighted to be the only Australian company invited to such a significant international festival.”

Explosion Therapy will be performed at the prestigious Shanghai Grand Theatre on July 5 and 6, and then the Nanjing Culture and Art Centre on July 11 and 12.

The tour to China has been made possible thanks to financial assistance from the WD Booth Charitable Trust, the Australia-China Council, and through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts. More information is available from Terrapin on 6223 6834.
