This Glass Menagerie is top shelf, and while blessed with an extraordinary cast and the highest of production values, it will not meet with everyone’s measure of how this play should be staged.

Ross NobleRoss Noble possesses the energy of an hyperactive 11-year-old, an outrageously heightened imagination and an inimitable English accent. Above all, he has an unrivalled ability to weave more than a dozen ideas into one joke, and condense a multitude of tangential thoughts and to produce consecutive moments of laughter. It is no wonder that Noble (who was, paradoxically, raised in a suburb called Cramlington) has been placed into top 10 comedian acclaim in the United Kingdom, and has a strong following at the 2008 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Dressed in bright blue shoes, black pants and a black shirt with blue patterned cuffs that match the stage set for the show: an elaborate, lightning-like caricature of his trade mark hair, Noble delivers 150 minutes of fast-paced, scattered and spontaneous humour accompanied by entertaining facial expressions and sound effects.

Noble is known for receiving gifts from audience members during his shows. On opening night, the use of exclamation marks and express ‘P.S’ requests for an encore and to be poked fun at, were quickly transformed into a hilarious series of running jokes throughout Act 2. Endearingly, Noble is self aware of his unique comic style: chuckling at a few of his particularly outlandish jokes, poking fun at his tendency to be easily distracted, and warning his audience to remain focused to avoid becoming lost in the Nobleism.

Traversing subjects such as ninjas, Japanese calligraphy, national anthems, faith healers, the story of the three little pigs, wolf whistles, Harry Potter, and hippogimps and linking them cleverly (and sometimes wackily) to social commentary on political correctness, racism and the recent behaviour of Wayne Carey, Noble confirms he is a stand out, stand up comedian. This show is destined to make you laugh, if you can handle the pace!
