The Green Room Awards Association today announced the nominations for the 2007 Awards for excellence on the Melbourne stage. In a year that marks the 25th anniversary of the Awards, the recipients will be announced in a ceremony on Sunday, 20 April at The Arts Centre.

The nominations, which were announced on Melbourne’s annual Theatre Day, cover the full spectrum of performance with this year expected to be one of the most competitive in its 25-year history. 2007 was a big and very diverse year on the Melbourne stage where audiences not only welcomed local productions, but also embraced those originating from interstate or overseas, a number of which were coproductions with Melbourne companies.

One of the most hotly contested categories this year is Music Theatre where the battle of the musicals remains fierce between the imported musicals re-created here, Miss Saigon (8 nominations) and Spamalot (9 nominations), and our own home-grown hits - Keating! (6 nominations) and Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical (8 nominations).

“The audiences for 2007 were delighted, thrilled and engaged by a huge variety of work by performers at the top of their game in venues from the Arts Centre and the CBD theatres to the twinkle in the Australian theatre tiara, La Mama in Carlton. Great theatre is happening out there every night of the week in Melbourne. Put down the remote and get out your front door” said Dr Mark Williams, President of the Green Room Awards Association.

The Green Room voting year is from January 1st to December 31st each year. The nominations and awards are made by the Green Room membership of industry professionals, via sub-committees for each discipline.
