After just one year in existence, the BHP Billiton Youth Arts Fund, a partnership of the South Australian Youth Arts Board and BHP Billiton, has been recognised with the inaugural Australia Council Arts for Young People AbaF Award.
South Australian children and young people are the focus of this four-year, $1 million partnership. The partnership builds on and expands existing programs to deliver a comprehensive suite of arts experiences for children across SA. Together these programs will enrich the lives of thousands of young people across South Australia, particularly in Adelaide, the Upper Spencer Gulf Region and Roxby Downs.
BHP Billiton established the partnership to not only inject goodwill into the communities they work, but also create sustainability in communities and ensure long term ongoing growth and development of youth arts and the arts in general.
SAYAB Chair, Katrina Sedgwick said, “Youth Arts plays a big part in building young people’s sense of self confidence, their self-esteem, and developing a feeling of community. SAYAB is broad in what it sets out to achieve, and without this support, we certainly would not have been able to commit to the regional projects that we have done so.”
The BHP Billiton Youth Arts Fund supports a myriad of projects including;
Carclew’s CARGO – Regional Artists in Schools,
Carclew’s Playfull - Live performance in Schools,
D’Faces of Youth Arts workshop program in Whyalla,
Carclew’s Odeon Theatre,
the biennial Come Out Festival,
Full House - giving disadvantaged schools the opportunity to attend live performances free of charge.
Also, huge congratulations to the team at the Australian Festival for Young People winning the National Australia Bank SME Award for the partnership between Come Out 07 and the Port Adelaide Football Club.
The Australian Business Arts Foundation Awards were established to encourage and reward great partnerships between arts organisations and corporate Australia.
