As befitting a work honouring the inventor of the printing press, Gutenberg! The Musical! is enamoured of words, drunk on words, intoxicated with text, mad for the metaphor, passionate for the pun.

They are the band called ‘Kinky’, from Monterrey in Mexico, and they are here to electro-rock Melbourne in their debut performance as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival. The 7-year old quintet’s genre is difficult to describe; it’s a brew of electronic-pop, techno beats, samba, latino groove, energy and sweat.

 

The sound sampler focused track was a cut above the rest, with its air of sophisticated funk. At times, however, the instruments were in such fierce competition that their subtleties were blurred. The jitteriness of the lead singer, who triples as a trumpeter and guitarist, and the band generally, was unprecedented. 

 

During this gig come party, the sound is at all times loud, explosively electrifying and has a definite ‘underground’ characteristic. So, if that turns you on…
