Backbone Youth Arts invites young and aspiring TV stars to join the national youth theatre project ONLINE SOAP and be washed away in the creation of a new soap opera series!

Initiated by Powerhouse Youth Theatre (PYT) in Sydney, ONLINE SOAP gives budding screen writers, actors and producers, aged 13-17 years, the chance to gain hands-on experience in creating an entirely original TV soap.

Youth theatre companies from across Australia will each create an episode to be broadcast on the Internet and the completed series will be collated in a DVD. Backbone project participants will work with cinematic theatre makers, Brad Jennings and Steven Maxwell from Markwell Presents (Advanced Screening, Sex:Cubed, La Boite) to develop the third episode of the series. Through a series of workshops, project participants will script, star in, shoot, edit and produce this episode.

Fraser Corfield, Backbone’s Artistic Director says, "Online Soap is one of those great projects that taps into popular culture. Drawing on their enjoyment of TV soaps, the project allows them to understand the cross over between watching TV and being on it!  It’s also a great forum for young people from across Australia to meet and talk with others with similar interests.”

The project commences Thursday 9 August and runs until October from AusDance Queensland’s new studio at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley.
