“That’s what I’m talking about”
Overseas artist, Stephen K Amos will make you laugh a true laughter. Equipped with an internationally recognised knack for stand up, a talent for mimicking various accents, a memorable stage presence, and the ability to entertain, it is no surprise that his opening night gig at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival was a sell out. Having just been on tour in Adelaide, Amos knows what he is talking about.
Staged at a venue which Amos dubs as a weird looking shopping mall on the outside and a ‘Tardis’ on the inside, the Capitol Theatre, Amos’ entrée into his hour or so long show is holy, as he takes on the persona of American priest, Peter Jesse Jones before shaking off his priest props to Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’. The energy, irony and sheer hilarity of his execution is infectious leaving the audience just wanting more.
And Amos delivers, joke after joke, centred on the themes of religion, hypocrisy and life’s pressures, all while he is essentially relaying his experiences of growing up in London with immigrant Nigerian parents, with great expectations. Layered within his jumping from topic to topic, are his brilliant and consistent references to Australian culture and the Aussie way. In this respect, Amos has undertaken his research!
It takes a naturally gifted comedian to first, make his audience consistently laugh uproariously and second, depart from his show agreeing that we should ‘look for the funnies’ in all life’s challenges.
