Dancehouse is proud to announce the appointment of David Tyndall as Artistic Director and CEO. This is an important appointment for Dancehouse – David is the first full-time Artistic Director who also takes up the position as Manager of the Centre.
Passionate about dance and the creative process, David will bring an energy and vision that will develop and extend the artistic program. 'I love dance because its one of the art forms that won’t always allow you to fully understand it, but at the same time, it will allow you to appreciate it, and be captivated by it. I want to excite audiences, I want to nurture emerging artists and I want to provide a platform for mid-career and established choreographers. Dancehouse is a centre for ideas and innovation in contemporary dance and also provides a home for independent contemporary dance artists in Melbourne so is in a unique position to do these things and more for dance in Australia.'
A trained dancer, David has worked extensively with many of Australia's and New Zealand's most important contemporary dance companies and independent choreographers.
After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts School of Dance, where he received a Boston Youth Scholarship to attend the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in the USA, David performed with Douglas Wright Dance Company (NZ), Sue Healey and Dancers, Sandra Parker, Phillip Adams, Garry Stewart, Matthew Bergen, Victorian State Opera, Lucy Guerin Company, Balletlab and Chunky Move. He received two 1998 Greenroom Awards - Best Performance by a Male Dancer for his performance in Chunky Move’s Bonehead and Best Ensemble Group for Lucy Guerin’s Heavy.
David was involved with Chunky Move over a six year period. He was a performer and Rehearsal Director and also served as a Director of the company from 1999 to 2001. He then became Company Coordinator and as well as continuing to perform and direct rehearsals; David was the company’s Tour Manager, IT Manager and the producer of the Maximised by Chunky Move program, the In-House program and the Action Moves movement classes for young boys.
In 2002, David was awarded an Emerging Manager’s and Producer’s Grant from the Australia Council Dance Board and worked in the Programming Department of Singapore’s Esplanade -Theatre’s on the Bay. In 2003, David worked on secondment with the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts and at the end of the year graduated from the University of South Australia with a Graduate Diploma in Arts Management.
David was Executive Producer of Dance Works from August 2004 until December 2005 and then Business Manager of Brisbane’s Expressions Dance Company before taking up his appointment with Dancehouse in January 2007.
