Virginia Gay
is one performer with a name you won't forget quickly, and an act likely to follow suit. During her show Dirty Pretty Songs, Virginia begins with gags about her school-yard taunt provoking, honestly parent-bestowed title, and from there, true to its name, the performance gets a whole lot dirtier and prettier.

Gay
has pieced together a collection of songs for her cabaret act which at once delight and unnerve an audience while showcasing her remarkable voice. Taking much loved hits like Mondo Rock's Come Said the Boy and Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, and reinvigorating them with sultry performances of their (when you hear them like that) truly dirty lyrics, Gay also lifts numbers from Australian political musical Keating! and film Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Championing the inner-freak and encouraging audience members to find theirs and share it with the world, Dirty Pretty Songs is as much uplifting as it is strikingly raunchy.

Gay, well known for her roles on All Saints and Winners & Losers, showcased her extraordinary singing talent on It Takes Two, however audiences should expect something a bit different from her cabaret act. Gay epitomises confidence when performing and is sexy as hell in this show. She demands attention while on stage, though wearing a knee length black skirt and a sheer black top which at times shows a little bit of midriff and a lot of back, she appeared sooner to need to fight off attentive fans than to vie for their attention.

Dirty Pretty Songs
is a slick show, with just enough comedy and honesty to make Gay an utterly human and completely irresistible performer to watch. Virginia Gay is a remarkable cabaret talent, and you should sieze any opportunity to see her at work.
