The Pillowman | University of Adelaide Theatre GuildLeft – Bart Csorba

University of Adelaide Theatre Guild’s The Pillowman
is a thriller that confronts, chills and probes in a way that leaves questions  – but none about its brilliance.

Misgivings may exist on many levels about the content, the questions raised and the twists and turns but none as to the luminosity of this production.

Two cops question an author in a n isolated interrogation room. This is the simple premise on which The Pillowman starts. From here playwright Martin McDonagh takes the audience on a journey that snakes through the deep, dark recesses of human behaviour. Reality and fantasy blur in this crazy cocktail.

Director Megan Dansie has pulled no punches in this piece de resistance. Her cast and crew rise to the occasion to create a spine-tingling production.

Set designer and Scenic artist Michael Kumnick has created an arena that works to support the bleak and yet rich story, and Tim Allan has designed lighting and sound that adds to the powerful message.

Bart Csorba is compelling as Katurian, the author at the centre of the investigation around which the play revolves. His is a herculean performance in a story that has no heroes. Tony Busch and Gary George are also forceful as the interrogators who gradually strip bear the truth only to reveal truths within themselves. Newcomer Robert Bell is equally adept in his role as Michael.

To tell the story or describe the characters in this play is to give away vital clues. Suffice it to say that this is a compelling play with shades of light and grey and very dark black.
