音の和(Oto no Wa): Harmony Through Music

The Boite is delighted to be organising a concert as part of the celebration of the 50 years of the Whitehorse-Matsudo Sister City Relationship. It’s a reminder of the many excellent projects designed to further international communication and understanding, and we embrace this opportunity to work with Box Hill Community Arts Centre.
The Whitehorse Sister City relationship with Matsudo in Japan, one of Australia’s oldest Sister City friendships, marks a post-war gesture of peace. In the spirit of fostering new friendships and cultural exchange, Koto player Brandon Lee and his ensemble will be joined by Sarita McHarg (sitar) and Manmit Singh (tabla) in this year's Matsudo Week concert. They will offer us the contrast of the tinkling string sounds of sitar, and the bold energy of Japanese Koto. Adding to the enchanting evening of music, Junko Azukawa will display some of her exquisite artwork. Junko grew up in Toyama, Japan and started learning traditional Japanese calligraphy at the age of five, one of her artworks is now in the National Gallery of Victoria’s collection.
