What's On

To Become A Phoenix

A captivating hour with two of Western Australia’s most exciting spoken word iconoclasts. Weaving poems around each other, Jakob Boyd (aka Laundryman) and Saoirse Nash take you through a trilogy of epic poems telling the tale of two
grand adventurers. Be charmed by two of the most exciting voices in new Western Australian poetry in an online show on sunday nights during the Melbourne Fringe.

Irish-Australian poet Saoirse Nash has performed sold-out fringe shows including 2018's Star Crossed Poetry. Her partner, Jakob Boyd, also known as Laundryman, is known in W.A. as the curator of the wildly popular Dirtymouth spoken word series of events. The son of notorious anarchist poet Antipoet, Jakob's poems take a softer approach to
activist text, infusing narrative and comedy to get his points across. The two are behind independent publishe Hectic Measures Press and also produce the Neon Readings series of live performance.

This show follows on from their earlier show on the Normal Place streaming platform, wherein they created a spoken word show during their two weeks in immigration quarantine hotel for performance on their final night in captivity.

This show builds on the intimate, chaotic energy of that event with a more focused work.

To Become A Phoenix appears as part of online performance platform Normal Place's Perthonalities season of six Western Australian shows as part of Melbourne Fringe. Tickets to the shows, running at 7:30pm on Sunday November 15, 22 and 29 are available now from melbournefringe.com.au .

“This is the kinda poetry show that will make you realise that your Year 12 English Lit teacher was teaching poetry
all wrong. You will leave lighter than when you entered, giddy and a touch more inspired.” ☆☆☆☆1/2 - OutInPerth

“Harnesses the honest power of poetry” - Isolated Nation “Legends in the Perth poetry world” - X-Press
