Hotel Now and City of Stonnington proudly presents

Her Father's Daughter

Her father's cabinet colleagues predicted she'd be the next female PM. Now Hedda Gabler has gone incognito as a wife. Bowing to societal pressure, Hedda has decided to marry old university friend and constitutional law reform expert George Tesman. However her first love Eli is back from self-imposed exile, having kicked his addictions with new collaborator and saviour Thea. He has a book out which everyone is acclaiming brilliant and further success beckons on his path.

Meanwhile all that Hedda has to divert her post-honeymoon are unappealing household duties, a possible pregnancy and a proposed strategic dalliance with old friend and new next-door neighbour Brack. When denied any real outlet, Hedda's fierce determination to make her life matter turns to frustration and she discovers an untapped gift for inciting chaos.

Her Father’s Daughter is Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler cut loose from the style and time of the original – creating a site-specific work from an inter-sectional feminist perspective.

This exciting new work is being presented in the civic spaces of Prahran Council Chambers to make resonant how privilege and inherited entitlement intersect with powerlessness and complacency; how our unfulfilled ambitions can implode and strong private identifications with inherited systems can impede women’s chances to be actual agents within society.

This is theatre for those who love classics and who want to be connected to the now. It directly relates to human issues relocated in our own familiar time and place – highlighting how we have so far to go before breaking free from issues raised by the misogyny speech and this 1891 classic.
