TREE OF LIFE: Journey Through the Eyes of Refugee Children

The Ensemble Theatre in Kirribilli affords a peaceful venue for the young refugee actors of the Treehouse Theatre to strut their stuff. For some young performers, the water views from the theatre foyer represent a subtle reminder of their journeys to Australia and their connection with their homelands.

Catherine Maguire-Donvito and Ruth Hartcher-O’Brien have assembled a talented cast of enthusiastic young people who all have stories to tell.

“Tree of Life: Journey Through the Eyes of Refugee Children” offers audiences a kaleidoscope of drama, pathos, humour and horror. It ranges from an eyewitness account of the murder of a beloved father, to a rollicking tale of pet chickens.

Not only have Maguire-Donvito and Hartcher-O’Brien inspired the children to give their best, but by doing so, they have also built confidence and resilience within the group and are paving the way to a greater understanding of refugee issues within the community.

The performance is part of an ongoing project to help young refugees recover from trauma, while at the same time build their English language skills.

If anything can make a difference to a greater understanding of refugee issues, “Tree of Life: Journey through the Eyes of Refugee Children” does just that.
