What's On

Ion Nibiru have announced that in December 2011, the Australian Premiere of a new play, THE BIRTHDAY BOYS, will open in Sydney. The darkly comic play written by American playwright Aaron Kozak, will be co-directed by Darren Gilshenan (Bell Shakespeare) & Kip Williams (Sydney Theatre Company). Produced by Ion Nibiru, THE BIRTHDAY BOYS will play an exclusive two-week engagement at the Parade Studio, NIDA from December 13-23.

Set in 2006 Iraq, three U.S. Marines are captured by insurgents during an unheard-of infiltration of the Al Asad Airbase, regarded as one of the safest bases in the country. At a remote warehouse, bound and blindfolded, the three soldiers must struggle with fear, betrayal and even boredom, leaving morale as their only ally against an uncertain fate. Alternately tense and hilarious, The Birthday Boys offers a riveting, non-partisan look at honour, redemption, and mateship.

Aaron Kozak wrote THE BIRTHDAY BOYS after visiting Hoa Lo Prison (The Hanoi Hilton) while working on a movie in Vietnam. After its knockout debut at the Hollywood Fringe Festival – winning the Best World Premiere Award and the LA Theatre Review Critics Choice Award, the play received its regional premiere at the historic Texas Theatre (where Lee Harvey Oswald was captured) in May, and has just Premiered to critical acclaim in New York.

We have chosen this story because of its contemporary relevance to the idea of what is happening to the human spirit. It struck a chord with us as being a poignant look at the state of the world we live in. Often there are so many things that confuse us, make us worried, even horrify us- this play encapsulates the apathy and desensitisation that exists in the world around us while we all simply try to make do and live.

"Without being disrespectful to the gravity of military service or the war in Iraq, [Aaron] Kozak finds dark humor in the humanity of three Marines... Go!" – LA Weekly "...a high-tension, clock-ticking-away dramatic thriller” -- LAist
