World Premiere: CROSSED by Chris Summers

Platform Youth Theatre, Appetite and La Mama Theatre present the world premiere of Chris Summers’ CROSSED; directed by Matt Scholten; designed by Kat Chan (set and costume), Lisa Mibus (lighting) and Pete Goodwin (sound); and featuring Prag Bhatia, Stefan Bramble, Nick Linehan, Jenny Lovell and Christopher Ioan Roberts at La Mama Courthouse from Thursday, 9 June – Sunday, 19 June 2011.

CROSSED is a collision of five strangers in gritty suburbia caught in the unseen ripple affects of a violent tragedy that unfolds in their local community.

As a challenging and confronting theatrical work, CROSSED highlights the consequences of people left disconnected and alienated without the ability to simply move on.

Playwright Chris Summers explains, “My intention wasn’t to write a play about trauma and death, but rather to use a fictionalised account of a tragedy a springboard to discuss broader social and political issues.”

I never judge or offer answers in CROSSED – my aim is to present conflicting ideas, positions and perspectives to encourage audiences to critically engage and establish their own conclusions on these views,” Summers said.

Director Matt Scholten is very excited about the script, describing Summers as “an incredibly original voice and mind who has clearly delved into the theatrical canon.”

Chris has found new, rich, artistic territory and with CROSSED has written a tough, uncompromising and very human story,” explained Scholten.

Commissioned by Platform Youth Theatre in 2009, CROSSED was written when Chris Summers was 21 years old – the play has also received creative development in 2010 and a rehearsed reading this year as part of PlayWriting Australia’s National Play Festival.

Platform Youth Theatre company manager, Rose Godde said, “Platform is 100% committed to the development of young emerging artists and we are thrilled at the strength of Chris's writing – it's exciting to be able to present tis work following a comprewhensive creative development period.”
