The Leura Shakespeare Festival

The National Trust of NSW and Sport for Jove Theatre are pleased to present the Leura Shakespeare Festival, an annual outdoor event commencing in 2010.

The festival will take place in the Everglades Gardens, utilising Australia’s only purpose built outdoor Shakespeare venue, over the weekends of 9/10th and 16/17th January 2010.

In the evenings, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ will be performed under the stars in the Garden Theatre, while ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ will be moving its audience from the Garden Theatre down to the Glade space in the afternoons.

“We’re hugely excited to create a new cultural event for the local community and beyond,” says director Damien Ryan.

“Summer outdoor Shakespeare festivals are iconic and significant events to so many communities throughout the world. This festival will celebrate our connection to each other, the exuberance of Shakespeare’s incomparable storytelling and the extraordinary setting of the Everglades. It’s the perfect venue to bring a picnic and a bottle of wine and sit beneath the moon to watch these youthful and romantic masterpieces brought to life.”

As one of the country’s foremost practitioners and educators in Shakespeare, Ryan has performed in or directed over 30 of the Bard’s plays, and has worked as an actor and director with The Bell Shakespeare Company since 2001, touring nationally and internationally.

For the Leura Shakespeare Festival, Ryan has assembled some of the finest young actors in Australia to create productions that are youthful, beautiful and dynamic.
