No one could accuse Gordon Southern of being a slick act.
In fact he comes across as a relaxed sort of a fellow who ambles from topic to topic, assuring us that his accidental long term visit to Australia is “nice”. Couldn’t be nicer in fact. Hence “Nisolation”.
After a more prolonged visit to Adelaide than he envisaged, he is in Perth and seemingly still happy to be in Oz versus his homeland Britain in the double grip of further outbreaks of Covid 19 and (shudder!) Brexit.
Southern, with his joke script firmly anchored on the floor by one foot, roamed through some amusing anecdotes about his stint as a comedian on a cruise ship and the characters he met there.
Diversions he sought in lockdown were illustrated by an occasional slide of empty shelves in grocery stores as he raided toilet paper in bulk quantities to create his sculptures of Sydney architectural icons. Envisage the Sydney Harbour Bridge model, scale to life size.
Then there was Australian television some of it (well lots of it) well deserving of a serve. In particular the feeble nature of Australian commercial news content.
Social distancing was discussed including a personal recommendation to visit Bunnings for the purchase of 1.5 metre sticks for this purpose.
His many experiences at job search were recorded, albeit unsuccessful applications for jobs including Dr Marten’s shoes salesman and even at the Adelaide Zoo. This exercise however landed his an extended visa so all good really!
On a cheerful note Southern discussed finding love in his Adelaide sojourn. Elle his new partner has also worked on cruise ships so they recreated a very funny week long scenario of cruise week theme events eg Monday; Captain’s Welcome drinks and so on ending in an hilarious gourmet dinner better left undescribed.
Despite being the subject of loud conversational interruptions and “repartee” from a particularly vocal New Zealand lass, Southern maintained his cool and finished with an unabashed appreciation of what Australian time had given him. Specifically an appreciation of the parks and green areas in our cities where he could happily walk for 10km a day as well as a blissful break from constant touring.
Personally I would have liked to see some more of his pithier satire as witnessed in his early clips on YouTube, but who can argue with the description of Australia as paradise? Surely not us. The lucky ones.
