Songs For Lovers (And Other Idiots) | Roulston & YoungPhoto – Sin Bozkurt

Roulston and Young deliver what cabaret promises, and so much more.

The stage relationship between Michael Roulston (keys and vocals) and Sarah-Louise Young (vocals) is a well-oiled entertainment machine. The fact that they have been working together for ten years should come as no surprise to anyone who sees them in action… and I really think that you ought to.

There is something very satisfying about being brought to the edge of an emotional plummet, only to be pulled from that edge and treated to a song about spending a whole day in one’s pyjamas, and drinking too much tea. That is not to say that there are not incredibly moving moments within this act, indeed there are a few of these. However, the dynamic duo strike a happy medium between moving melodies, and up-beat “snappy” musical numbers.

Nothing is out-of-bounds in this hysterical reflection on modern life, and modern love. Indeed, the artists do not even hold themselves above mockery, providing audiences with hilarious anecdotes, and tales of awkward encounters… This show is like having a conversation with that one really inappropriate friend, whose opinions you share only too well, but which you might not be overly willing to express, at least not as openly as they are.

This brilliant piece of bite-sized theatre is only in town this week, it is well worth taking the time to see it.
