Suave leading man, Broadway's Brian D'Arcy James, made his Australian debut at Adelaide's Dunstan Playhouse.
Titled Under the Influence, the two-time Tony nominated singer/actor eased himself into a mixture of pop and Broadway tunes. Probably best known here as Debra Messing's husband on the short-lived television series Smash, the man proved both his versatility with different musical styles and his status as a leading man.
Early influences on his musical interests came from 70s and 80s pop favourites, with tributes to the songs of Squeeze, Billy Joel and even Sting.
His stage repertoire was well represented, singing tunes from Sweet Smell of Success, Next to Normal and yes, even Shrek (one of his starring roles). Included in the mix was a great medley º It Had to Be You / All of Me / Isn't She Lovely - all written by songwriters from his home town of Saginaw, Michigan. A beautiful rendition of Unusual Way from Nine was another highlight of the evening.
Ably supported by a four-piece ensemble, Brian D'Arcy James made his attentive audience very welcome with a eclectic mix of songs, chat and a relaxed ambiance.
