Three Bags Full | The Kransky SistersThe Kransky Sisters, long-time darlings of the Australian cabaret circuit, bring their show Three Bags Full to the Brisbane Powerhouse for a six night season. You know there’s a good evening of kooky comedy in-store when this sister act rolls into town.

The Kransky’s, Mourne, Dawn and Eve, otherwise known as Annie Lee, Christine Johnston and Carolyn Johns, hail from Esk in Queensland and their countryside sensibilities set an oddball scene of music, story, and sisterly comic banter. Armed with kitchen pots, tambourines, a toilet brush and a tuba among other instruments, the sisters play a medley of songs they learnt off their beloved wireless, though all to their own tune. Singing covers ranging from AC/DC to Nana Mouskouri, in this show the sisters recount the tale of their recent international adventures, chasing mishap and misadventure across the U.K. and Europe.

The stories between songs are riotous accounts of sexual deprivation and naïve criminal activity, all told with enigmatic sincerity and an old world ignorance that can only be explained by the fact they’ve lived a sheltered life in the Queensland countryside.  Dawn, the quietest and most strange of the sisters lives in a laundry and tends to her separated coloured lint collection. Mourne and Eve share a room with two single beds as they have done all their lives, and there’s more than a little sexual frustration lingering. As the show progresses, more and more of the sister’s history is revealed through memories and the rearing of old sibling rivalries, and much hilarity ensues.

Each character is impeccably developed, as if the three women may have embodied so much Kransky over the years that the sisters now hold such power over them they are barely acting. While all are painfully demure, Mourne, the eldest sister has a dry wit that is used to full force when a man from the audience joins the trio for a tambourine solo. The consequences of this illicit male contact are brilliant and ripple through the remainder of the show.

If you haven’t yet encountered the Kransky Sisters do not hesitate to go see them, and if you really love it, you can even pick yourself up one of their darling tea-towels to take home afterwards.
