Lady Sings It Better | Blackcat ProductionsAs far as cabaret goes, this particular incarnation by the girls who form Lady Sings It Better is spectacular, in the real showstopper sense. Performing their debut concert at The Red Rattler, the ladies brought Broadway to Marrickville in a somewhat gender bending, unconventional way. Lady Sings It Better is the creation of Director Maeve Marsden (who is also one of the singers) and Production Manager Phoebe Meredith.

This was my introduction not only to this type of performance but also this venue. The Red Rattler has been born from the need for a permanent community arts venue that operates legally (and cheaply) and can be depended on to stay open. The Red Rattler is run by artists for artists and was an ideal situation to bring Lady Sings It Better to inner Sydney audiences. The old industrial factory with its red hues and tones and rustic boudoir furniture was the perfect space for this all gal performance. It highlighted the nuances of the Lady Sings It Better act as if by design rather than by chance.

Lady Sings It Better is an all woman cabaret styled show with a set list featuring songs that have been written and performed by men. Opening the show was support act Kate Duffy who also played renditions of “men’s songs”. The highlight of her bracket was Gnarles Barkley’s “Crazy”, which was the second interpretation of this song that I have heard but the first that has been done by a lady. This solo slot was but a taster of what was in store for the evening.

Talk about sisters doing it for themselves…the showstopper was just the start of the show. With a chorus comprising six women and accompanying musicians (Greg Stevens – Drums, Chris Williams – Piano & Lily Donovan – Bass/Cello) the girls burst on stage singing AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” with opera like harmonies. Each song got the treatment as originally intended - the words for each song were not adapted for a female singer instead they kept the lyrics as if sung by a male. This made for great comedy and "Fat Bottom Girls" by Queen mixed with "I Like Big Butts" by Sir Mix-A-Lot was literally laugh out loud stuff!

Lady Sings It Better delivers song, dance, cabaret and comedy all under the one bosom. It is the sort of show that takes audiences by pleasant surprise and a show that I intend to catch again (because they choose such great songs to cover).
