The Boy from Oz | VCAPhotos - Jeff Busby

This week the VCA Music Theatre Department and VCA Production Department present The Boy from Oz, the hit musical based on the life and songs of Peter Allen.

As their website reminds us, “The Boy from Oz tells the dazzling and heart-breaking story of the great entertainer Peter Allen and his meteoric rise to fame: from Tenterfield NSW to Hong Kong, Hollywood and beyond, the highlights, the lowlights, the successes and the losses and, most importantly, the instantly recognisable music of Peter Allen.”

Year after year, the VCA musical theatre department seems to be turning out talented crop after talented crop of singers, dancers and performers and this current group, performing in The Boy from Oz is no exception.

Jordan White, who plays Peter (and played ‘young Peter’ in the original professional production) does an outstanding job singing, dancing, charming, razzling and dazzling the audience with his talent and charisma. A star of the future, there is no doubt.

Other performance highlights are Kelsey Holmes, outstanding in the role of Liza Minnelli, Kazim Kane, completely convincing as Peter’s partner, Greg, and ‘young Peter’, played in this performance by the utterly adorable and gifted Fletcher O’Leary.

The musical direction by Chelsea Plumley is superb, which helps audience members immerse themselves in the energy and emotion of Peter’s wonderful songs.

Overall, the production was not as strong as the audience’s lengthy applause at the end seemed to indicate - given most of the audience was family and friends (demonstrated by audience members regularly yelling out the real names of their friends in the cast on stage). As strong as some of the performances are, one still gets the feeling it’s a solid student production of a great show.

Congratulations on VCA for being brave enough to produce The Boy from Oz. It is another wonderful achievement to add to a long list of great shows produced by the Musical Theatre Department. If you get a chance to see it, it’s definitely worth a look.
