Adelaide’s acclaimed young singer Julia Henning is a fervent performer who delivers an evening of emotion and intimacy in her act Little Miss Me.
It is likely that this young chanteuse’s star is rising. No doubt once she reaches her heights in the national or international firmament her renown will be claimed as an overnight success. Nothing could be further from the truth. This young woman has been performing since the age of nine. Her own compositions have won numerous awards and she has released her own CD.
In Little Miss Me Henning is mesmerizing as she creates an intense and emotional rapport with her audience through both the mediums of words and music. However, it is her soul-stirring singing voice that speaks the loudest.
In the tradition of singers such as K D Lang and Eva Cassidy, Henning lets her emotions flow through her music. It seems that she has chosen songs in her repertoire that allow her to express her feelings. This is an amazingly mature performance from a 17-year-old artiste.
George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, Amanda McBroom’s “The Rose” and Ned Jones and Hoagy Carmichael’s “The Nearness of You” are just a few of the numbers that enable this songbird to release her passion.
Henning plays one track on piano and one on harp, but mostly the talented Trudy Hart backs her. Henning has also written a number of her own songs, some with Hart. Highlights include “Take Away the Memories”, the title song “Little Miss Me’ and “I Surrender”.
Most of Henning’s selection of songs is emotional, romantic or reflective. When she ventures into the more comic number “The Armadillo” (by Flanders and Swann) a different side is revealed, one that could perhaps be explored more fully with a more varied assortment of songs. Nevertheless this is one stellar young artiste worth keeping in sight.
