ANH DO is
an extremely likeable person and comic. From the moment he begins, he
has the audience laughing with him as he relates observations, past
gigs and personal misfortunes, while always making us feel like we’re
‘in on the joke’.
So
what’s the show about? It’s about his life for better and worse, as he
tells his journey from living in poverty in Vietnam as a child right
through to studying Law, but giving it all up t o be a comedian and
performing on Rove, Thank God You’re Here and Dancing with the Stars - a sad, amazing personal story with a fairy tale ending, what more could an audience want?
The
gut wrenching tale of Anh and his family coming out on a boat to
Australia when they ran out of food and water, were robbed and about to
die, but saved at the last minute by a passing ship made one wonder if
it was all seriously true and if it was, then this guy is even more
incredible at being able to look back and laugh at it and have such
great success since. I found myself clapping simply because anyone
who’s been through that, can come on stage, tell us the story and make
us laugh with him about it, deserves the applause.
His
gig at the white, ‘right’, waspy RSL club where they stood for a minute
silence for their lost brethren who died in the Vietnam War, killed by
those damn slopes, as Anh waited in the wings ready to entertain them,
and the MC takes one look at him and whispers ‘Jesus Christ’ to
himself before introducing Anh as Duncan O’Reilly - funny, endearing
material and Anh relates stories like these with finesse.
And then he brought the props out, but I won’t spoil the ending for you.
Anh Do Live
is a light-hearted, inspiring, funny one hour show, about Anh’s amazing
life which genuinely makes one laugh then cry, then laugh even louder.
Definitely worth a look if you’re floundering, looking through the
comedy program, wondering which shows stand apart from the rest.
