Albert's Party | Luke & Wyatt

Albert's Party | Luke & Wyatt Talent abounds between Luke Ryan and Wyatt Frederick Nixon-Lloyd. As well as performing Albert’s Party, they also wrote it themselves and composed the music too. I’m not convinced, however, that this show is the vehicle to launch them into the big time: while I don’t doubt that their big break is imminent, Albert’s Party is not without some flat spots.

Luke & Wyatt have a Tripod-esque feel to them. They have strong singing voices and are clearly talented musicians. They’re very comfortable together and riff off one another extremely well, a skill that enabled them to ride out several technical hitches on closing night by easily getting the audience to laugh through them.

The show certainly has a high-energy beginning (and, with gaps, a similarly charged middle and end), where audience members are welcomed as party guests, given party hats and poppers, and introduced to the entertainment of the evening as we wait for special guest, Albert. The reason for the wait is not what you’d expect, and it makes for a great idea for a comedy show; with more songs and less dialogue I think Albert’s Party would hit its mark.

Two of the songs in the show - one about cleaning up after a party, where the only guests that show up are the hosts parents who proceed to get drunk and play naked twister, and a sort of Creed/Evanescence inspired break-up song (which sounded quite a lot like Meatloaf to me) - are extremely good. When Wyatt puts on a rock voice – a la Tim Minchin – he’s impressive, to say the least. I just wanted more of the same; this is where Luke & Wyatt excel, and there’s certainly room for them to explore this style of performance further without fear of treading on anyone’s toes. They have a refreshingly different style and a distinct gen-Y flavour. The “Circle of Life” moment at the end of the show is totally hilarious stuff.

Unfortunately for me, I had what I can only presume to be a heckler behind me who nearly deafened me with his superhero-esque cries of HA-HA! every five minutes. If he wasn’t a heckler, then I can categorically say I’ve now heard the most ridiculous (and loudest) laugh that’s ever existed. If he was a heckler, the boys carried on without blinking an eye.

Despite needing to put some more work into their material, I’d say that these talented young men have the comic world at their feet. They have all the raw ingredients necessary to be extremely successful, so make sure you keep an eye out for them.
