c-90 | Daniel KitsonC-90 is a textured story show jigsaw comprising of many pieces of kindness, hope and dreams. The core message is that the simple, small things in life really do matter and should not be undermined, celebrating the power of self-realisation, routine and everyday ruminations. Highly regarded as a stand up comedian and for his trade mark stutter, this is Daniel Kitson's third story show since he began writing and performing this genre in 2003, and forms part of the 2007 Melbourne International Arts Festival program.

Immediately obvious is Kitson’s flare for solo performance, his penchant for manipulating words and language and his passion for the story. As narrator, he takes genuine ownership of conveying countless details of the ostensibly uneventful lives of Henry (a compilation tape archivist of muddy hope and a catalogue of dreams) and Millie (a lolly pop lady whose role it is to guard the lemming-like children of the future), around whose the witty story is primarily based.

In a direct compliment to the themes of this detailed tale, Kitson describes a multiplicity of moments to achieve character development, some of which do get lost in Kitson’s speedy pace, lisp and Scottish accent. However, with his naturally nerdy quality and enthusiasm, Kitson intelligently and amusingly brings life to the seemingly uneventful characters' lives as we learn about their individual mysteries.

The large shelf completely filled with stacked cassette tapes with a sliding ladder grounds the intimate stage setting. Some of the stretches of dialogue performed facing the shelf is difficult to hear. Given the richness of the script, the minimal use of props, effects and movement was fitting.

The source of inspiration for this piece seems to be Kitson giving his first girlfriend a compilation tape. This one will make you see a different angle of life and make you smile.
