 Karen Knowles, always one of this country’s best singers, presented a solid and entertaining program at the New Capers on August 4th. This venue, an energetic supporter of Australian music, provided an intimate, sympathetic setting for this fine performer, accompanied by the versatile David Cameron on guitar and piano. Material came from many sources, Cyndi Lauper and Edith Piaf, Andrea Bocelli and The Seekers, Rodgers and Hammerstein and John Lennon. Perhaps the evening’s highlight is, in fact, her version of Imagine, one of the best I’ve ever heard, sung with sincerity, conviction, and a sure feeling for climax. There isn’t much patter between songs, and few instrumental sections within them, so the emphasis is very much on the songs and their lyrics, but the broad selection gives constant pleasure. The program could perhaps gain from some more original or out-of-the-way pieces, so it was refreshing to hear George Harrison’s Be Here Now (with a subtle Indian-type accompaniment) and Sting’s Fields of Gold. However, amongst the more familiar songs, the melody of her early hit Why Won’t You Explain? is as appealing as ever. This slim, attractive figure has lost none of the warmth and accuracy which have always been her trademarks, and she remains a singer in whom an audience can place full and immediate confidence.
