 Remember
the name Karin Muiznieks. Learn how to spell it, pronounce it and when
you see it on a poster (or billboard), go and see her show. She is a
star in the making with talent that literally bursts out of every seam. Yet another ‘musical theatre performance course graduate’, Karin is cast from a different mould, unlike the herd in more ways than one. She’s unlikely to get a chorus role in any major musical, unlikely to get the lead in Phantom, Les Miserables or Priscilla Queen of the Desert and if she was cast in a big, commercial stage show, she would be unlikely not to steal the limelight. Karin is funny, human and has more strings to her bow than a bow with a serious number of strings! Better at a Distance is a simple blend of song and storytelling as Karin links the piece together with things, moments, objects or people who might be enjoyed ‘better at a distance’. She can certainly deliver a song and anecdote, drawing constant laughs, connecting with the audience and including them in the experience rather than singing or performing at them. James Simpson, who accompanied her, was beautifully integrated into the performance and did an outstanding job. As a performer, Karin is natural, humble, entertaining and giving. As a songwriter, she is wise and witty beyond her years. For me, if there was a weakness in the evening, it was the show holistically. The theme barely holds the night together. Some of her songs are stronger than others; funnier, more honest, better-structured, more entertaining – that is the nature of cabaret - but it’s one after the other and I couldn’t help feeling about two-thirds of the way through...’how many more?’ With a little more over-all structure, a dramatic situation to make us care from start to finish, a subject worth spending 90 minutes with and a little more physicality in the performance under the guidance of an experienced director, Karin Muiznieks is not far away from taking the musical theatre world by storm in her own, unique, unlikely way.
