Instant soup. Instant coffee. Three minutes in the microwave. Two-minute noodles. Why not speed-dating and an instant soul mate?
Six Minute Soul Mate is a sharp expose of the dating game, of looking for love in a society that reveres instant gratification. Vitalstatistix Theatre Company - renowned for producing thought-provoking theatre – has once again pushed the boundaries, as the audience is lead by a love bunny into three separate dating rooms. Each room has a backdrop with a large heart-shaped scene – Tropical Paradise, Winter Wonderland and a Moonlit Vista. These set the scene for three speed daters to introduce themselves in a bright and breezy manner in the first room. The result is fun, and funny. The mood starts to change in the second room as the same three characters appear, portrayed by different actors. Frances Barrett, Kate Blackmore, Kelly Doley and Diana Smith cleverly interchange each role slowly stripping the optimistic and cheerful personas to divulge a vulnerable underbelly of neediness. As the facades crumble the resulting desperation for love is painful. Humour fades and an awkward comprehension results. Loneliness has long been the basis for many a person’s desire for love, but in Six Minute Soul Mate dramaturg Daisy Brown is exposing the loss of soul in the search for a soul mate. This is a provocative piece, challenging the modern-day desire for intimacy in all the wrong places. Since when has a desire for companionship, a soul mate or deep love become such a desperate measure? This 55-minute Fringe portrayal gives plenty of food for thought.
