Robert Love, Director of Riverside Theatres this week announced a diverse performance season of drama, opera, satire and dance for Riverside’s July to December 2008 Performance Season. Riverside Theatres now creates two six monthly seasons annually, to allow for more adaptable and reactive programming. Rather than choosing seasons more than 12 months in advance, Riverside is able to capitalise on shows that are created during the year.

As part of this new season, Riverside is producing and touring two shows throughout NSW through it’s Riverside Productions arm, a full scale production of Don Reid’s Codgers and Shakespeare’s R & J, adapted by Joe Calarco. Both will have interstate tours in 2009. “Increasingly Riverside is developing plays and productions through our Breakout program, and following seasons in our theatres touring them across NSW, interstate and at times, internationally,” said Robert Love.

Following its successful workshop season in 2007, the funny and touching Codgers will mark the commencement of this exciting new season. It is followed by Shakespeare’s R & J which explores adolescent love as four schoolboys take a journey of self discovery through The Bard’s great play.

An exploration of love and passion is revealed in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly from Oz Opera, and Athol Fugard gives us a gentle insight into the hopes and dreams of a young South African girl and the fears of her grandfather in Valley Song.

Then the genius of Steven Berkoff is flexed in two short plays that are, by turn, harrowing and hilarious. Satire and laughter are order of the day with the return of the wonderful Wharf Revue team, and Damien Millar delves into the rollercoaster life of the international aid worker in The Modern International Dead.  Put on your ballet slippers and twirl with Tasdance and then pirouette to the end of the year with the WA Ballet and the romance of The Red Shoes.
