Maj Monologues Finalists Announced Print E-mail
Monday, 30 April 2007
The 2007 entries on the piquant theme The Seven Deadly Sins (pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth; just in case you needed reminding!) have proved an inspiring choice for W.A. writers this year with 141 entries received by the closing date on Friday March 30th 2007.

The panel of judges has been announced and they are Benj D’Addario, Jenny MacNae, Hellie Turner and John Senczuk. Their respected theatre credentials represent the highest levels in the theatre disciplines of designing, acting, writing, directing and production.

Belinda Dunbar, Director of Brainbox Theatre Project said today “I have been absolutely delighted with the quality and quantities of entries received and the judges have had an extremely hard task deliberating over the eight winning entries.”

The finalists are (in alphabetical order of author)

Argentine Pride by Michael Bowyer - a love story under a subway

Gavin Regrets by Therese Edmonds - Gavin rues getting himself into such an embarrassing situation!

The Motherlode by Lis Hoffmann - 'you are your mother's daughter - whether you like it or not'

Lucifer ‘as Summit To Say by Meredi Ortega - well-known motivational speaker and authority on sins, Lucifer, has finally come to Perth

The Young Are Revolting by Ben O’Shea - 'I think it is an important statement about the way society is headed, mostly due  to our own apathy, and asks the question 'what would happen if we decided not to stand for it anymore?'

A Fettler’s Tale by Greg Ross - Oz in the 1970s, real men were always hung-over. The cricket team drank the plane dry, railway workers drank the train dry. No rules, no prisoners, no regrets.

The Truth Looks Strange by Cara Sutcliffe - Janie is fifteen, and looking for love in all the wrong places. She has a dad at Wooroloo and a puppy called Chocolate and a girlfriend called Jane, cute hey, and you can stay and listen if you like. This is her park, you're just sitting in it.

Greed by Jacqueline Wright - Maggot is sitting on a goldmine. He’d be a happy man if only the council would leave him alone-and to make things worse his friends are gathering like vultures.

These eight finalists will now have their monologues performed by professional performers in
a five performance finals season Downstairs at the Maj. Emily MC Lean will direct. The format of the evening will be four short monologues followed by an interval and then the final four short performances.

On the final evening of the season the winner of the judges’ choice will be announced and a first prize of $3000.00 awarded.

Each night of the season audience members will have a chance to vote for his/her favourite monologue. The Hawaiian Group Peoples’ prize of $1000.00 will presented to the author of the monologue which has been voted most popular choice by all the audiences who have attended the shows.
