Lyric Opera presents Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea

POPPEA Profile Pic 05.jpgAll the might of Rome is no match for the dangerous power of passion.

This July, be transported by Lyric’s bold re-imagining of Monteverdi’s Coronation of Poppea; a bloodthirsty baroque drama in which love triumphs, but at what cost?

Re-set in 1960s Rome, this dangerous and sexy production will tell the tale of the beautiful Poppea’s as she convinces the Emperor Nero to abandon his wife, destroy his friends and crown her Empress.

This production will be held in the intimate surrounds of Chapel Off Chapel in Prahran, with the audience close to all the action – Think House of Cards meets Game of Thrones in a hipster pop up bar with a seriously old school soundtrack – and is a great introduction to opera if you’ve never been before!

The Coronation of Poppea is the last and arguably greatest of Monteverdi’s operas, and was first performed in Venice in 1643 and is now considered the first operatic ‘masterpiece’.

It will be brought to the stage in his operatic debut by Tyran Parke, direct from his sold out production of the musical Big Fish in Sydney, and will be sung in the original Italian with English surtitles.

The exceptional cast will be led by Rebecca Rashleigh opposite Opera Australia’s Nick Jones as Nero. Caroline Vercoe will play the scorned Empress alongside countertenor sensation Nicholas Tolputt and bass Damian Whitley.

Get a group together, and book your spots to experience a night out like no other!
