A dark and whimsical tale, and the only new Australian work in this year’s atyp Under the Wharf Season, The Hiding Place is a haunting play from exciting young writer Kendall Feaver.

Emily has been hidden away from the outside world for most of her life. A fearful old woman keeps her locked in an attic in an attempt to keep her innocent forever. But when a young man discovers her, Emily is forced to reconsider everything she knows to be ‘true’ of the world beyond her walls.

Can what she does not know, indeed hurt her?

Beautifully wrought from the pages of fairy tales and modern-day newspaper reports, and with a small intimate cast, this is an evocative work that explores the unsteady line between accepted creed and childhood fable. Playwright Kendall Feaver explains “I wanted to write a play about the struggle for young people to develop their own moral compass separate from the dominant religious, political and ethical views of parents.”

Director Kai Raisbeck is excited at the prospect of tackling such a contentious topic “Parents are the original lawmakers who wield significant influence over their young charges. I can’t wait to start exploring this power-play within the confines of such a delicate scenario.”

At only twenty-two, Kendall Feaver is the highly acclaimed writer of Rocket Boy (Adelaide Fringe 2011) and The Forgotten (runner-up STC Young Playwright of the Year). The Hiding Place is beautifully directed by Kai Raisbeck (Griffin Theatre 2011 Affiliate Director) who has brought a keen eye to this poignant script. Prior to this production, the play has taken part in a 3 month creative development at Queen Street Studios and Play Detox with Lachlan Philpott through Griffin Theatre Company.
