THE PRIDE by Alexi Kaye Campbell

The PrideRed Stitch presents the Australian premiere of The Pride, a brilliantly crafted, time shifting exploration of sexual freedoms then and now, by acclaimed British playwright Alexi Kaye Campbell.

It’s 1958. Phillip is married to Sylvia, and finds himself in a destructive state of denial when he falls in love with another man. Five decades later, modern day Phillip, in an openly gay relationship, struggles with his partner’s infidelities. Both Phillips are trapped in a world of lovelessness and heartbreak. In an era of supposed sexual liberation, what are the new challenges for homosexual men?

Powerful and often amusing analogies are made between the epochs, as the actors inhabit identically named – but distinctly different – characters.

After its debut at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2008, Campbell was awarded The Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright and the John Whiting Award for the Best New Play.

Gary Abrahams (The Laramie Project - Ten Years Later, Day One, A Hotel, Evening, Acts of Deceit) returns to Red Stitch to direct this heart-felt and thought provoking Australian premiere featuring Red Stitch ensemble member Ngaire Dawn Fair with special guests Lyall Brooks, Ben Guerens and Ben Prendergast.
