Variant

On 26 July, The Reginald 2012 season will launch with a bang when award winning Sydney choreographer Sue Healey premieres the incredible new dance work, Variant.

Variant examines variation within the human form, both in physical and emotional dimensions, and celebrates the extraordinary powers of movement.

An eclectic mix of artists makes up the Variant cast including the short-statured performer Kiruna Stamell who radically alters the idea that small size is a handicap, the very tall performer James Berlyn and the ultra-flexible artists Narelle Benjamin and Benjamin Hancock.

Rounding out the cast is Nalina Wait and Rachelle Hickson whose characters desire conformity but as the drama unfolds, explode into radical emotional variants. Live music is created by Pat Wilson (piano and accordion) and sung by Stamell and Berlyn.

Each of the six performers takes Healey’s fluid choreography and fearlessly makes it their own as they explore the diversity of the human body and its extreme variations. The result is a celebratory and moving piece of contemporary dance, combining humour and humanity to reveal that one size never fits all.
