Give war a chance…

As the world gears up for the 2012 London Olympics, the Tamarama Rock Surfers are plotting an event of their own. This June, prepare yourself for the world premiere of ALL THE RAGE, a biting funny and vicious new work by John AD Fraser (Rock Paper Scissors, The Greatest Roadhouse), directed by Rock Surfers artistic director Leland Kean.

It’s London 2012, and the greatest show on earth is about to commence. On the surface it’s peace, love and plastic lanyards, but deep beneath the stadium a terrible beauty stirs. The boys are going back to war.

For former commander Skin-the Goat, the laying down of arms has brought the trappings of power but drained him of respect. So he puts the band back together for one more operation. Coercing the young, Viet Cong-obsessed Boyler into action, Skin-the-Goat hauls his best but most traitorous bomber – The Baker - to send the Olympics off with the ultimate bang and then step in as the ultimate saviour and impress the ambitious journalist Nina.

As long as he keeps the plan on track, he’ll keep the peace, the prize, the girl, and a neat revenge on the quisling who forced him to stop the war in the first place. But war, like love, is easier to start than to stop. And just like the games, not everyone is ready to play by the rules.

Director Leland Kean is delighted with the work, “I love directing comedy and have a great passion Irish theatre. It is a wonderful opportunity to premiere what is a new Australian play that connects all these passions of mine. New writing, comedy and Irish theatre.”

For playwright John Fraser the play came from his past “I grew up in Scotland where the elephant of the Troubles was not so much in the room as out in the back yard kicking a football around. I figured it was the right time to take a peek out of the back window and see what was going on, now the Celtic Tiger has left the building.

Both men are delighted to be working together again and look forward to the season. Kean says, “The play has all the great elements of Irish theatre, it's a ripping yarn and will leave the theatre with the audience. I hope the next morning a few computers screens are sprayed with coffee shot out of noses when people remember what they have seen the night before.” Fraser agrees, “I think they'll laugh, be surprised, and hopefully at least a bit offended. Good theatre should evoke emotion and make you think. I'm enough of an optimist to hope for all of that.”
