audio_slidesow_ljMelbourne’s La Mama Theatre has been at the forefront of independent theatre in Australia for over 40 years.

Earlier this year, they received notice that their home in Faraday St Carlton, was to be sold. The company immediately set about raising the $1.7 million required to secure the property, and with just one month remaining before the deadline, they still need to raise a further $500,000.

This photo essay contains images from some of La Mama’s most seminal productions – The Removalists, White With Wire Wheels, Norm & Ahmed as well as early photos of some of the stars to have graced its stage – Cate Blanchett, David Williamson, Sophie Lee and Bruce Spence to name but a few. Australian Stage’s Jan Chandler spoke to La Mama’s Artistic Director, Liz Jones, about the artistic and historical importance of this iconic Australian venue.
