COUNT DOWN TO OPENING NIGHT = 24 DAYS Welcome to our first blog entry regarding Hoy Polloy's production of the Australian première of Fin Kennedy's play How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found directed by Paul King. In our blog entries, we aim to highlight different aspects of the production process including rehearsals, technical aspects and commentary from cast members and the production team. Production Overview Winner of the prestigious 2005 John Whiting Award for New Writing, Fin Kennedy’s extraordinary work presents the nightmarish journey of a young business executive as he is stripped of everything that made him who he was. Part surreal black comedy, part profound human tragedy, the play hurtles toward a compelling climax as it asks what really makes us who we are in the 21st Century. Auditions Our auditions were held over the March Labour Day long weekend, where we had a terrific response to our audition notice. Casting The director and cast Australian première of How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found includes (from left to right): • Paul King > director • David Passmore > Charlie / Adam • Tory Rodd > Sophie • Michael F Cahill > ensemble • Glen Hancox > ensemble • Helen Hopkins > ensemble
Rehearsals The director and cast have been in rehearsals three times a week for the past five and a half weeks. We aim to provide photographs from rehearsals and commentry from key people involved in the production in future blog entries. Technical Aspects The production team is locked in and working hard with set design and construction, sourcing the numerous and varied props required, preparing costumes and discussing lighing and sound elements. Marketing & Publicity The marketing and publicity is shaping up nicely. We have recreated an identity (see below image) for the production, including the production of posters and postcards. The media release has been prepared and distributed. And we have organised our publicity photographs. Commentary > Actor: Helen Hopkins Helen has worked with Hoy Polloy in the last production, Boston Marriage by David Mamet. In How To Disappear Completely And Never Be Found, Helen plays a number of roles. She recently made the following comments regarding this production: "After the first read through, I quickly realised, that as far as props go, it's a very busy show. So our early rehearsals tended to focus on the technical side of the show as well as blocking the scenes.Right now we are really starting to get our teeth into the characters and the world of the play. "Costume changes for Glen, Mick and I (who play multiple roles) are minimal; just small additions to a base costume, so making the right character choices is important. "Deciding which British accents to use for my various characters was easy in some cases and very difficult in others. Certain characters just came out in a particular accent to me from the beginning but others I had to search a little harder for. "Once the choices are made, my normal self doubt creeps in. For me the later part of a rehearsal period is dealing with that. I have got better at it; it used to be quite torturous, and I now start to recognise the onset and accept it as part of my working process. A bit of doubt can be a positive thing"
