Job Description YIPA - YOUTH IN PERFORMING ARTS 2008, a production of Gosford City Council

Laycock Street Theatre will hold auditions over three dates for spaces in the 2008 YIPA Concert Series.  Due to the overwhelming popularity of the annual youth event, the theatre now requests that persons or groups wishing to audition, schedule a time on one of the audition dates.  "What happened in 2007 was that we had huge numbers of young people turning up on a first in, first auditioned basis and by the end of the audition process, we felt that some people had not been given a chance because we had run out of time", said Marketing Coordinator Lisa Kelly.  "We hope that by booking in for an audition, everyone will get a chance and we may be able to schedule some of the large bands and groups to be seen at other times.  We would love to see Dance Schools and Highschool bands, ensembles and choruses send in a DVD, video or audio track.  This will free up our Audition Panel to see individuals over the three scheduled days", said Ms Kelly.

In 2008, Gosford City Council will allocate over $12,000 in scholarship monies and in-kind training opportunities to young people from age 12 to 21 years who gain a place in the YIPA concert series which happens from 3rd to 7th June 2008.  Performers must be from the Central Coast and all forms of performance art are welcome.  "In 2007 we had lots of boys performing, either as soloists, in duets or in bands.  It's great to see boys getting on stage and it's wonderful to see them doing something slightly out of the box", said Chris Cox who has directed the concert series since its inception in 1992.  "Apart from having fun, YIPA performers can learn some stagecraft skills from our experienced production crew, win scholarships and make friends along the way", said Mr Cox, who is Deputy Principal at Valley View Public School.

"What I find inspiring" said Debra Schleger (Manager Arts & Culture for Gosford City Council) "is when I see young people get together to combine their skills and love of the performing arts.  To see music combined with film projection, or dance combined with live music, takes some imagination but the results are thrilling for the audience", said Ms Schleger.

Anyone wanting more information can phone the theatre on 4323 7299 or go to the website at www.laycockstreet.com/YIPA.html where they can download the Booking Form and Information Sheet.  Information is also available from libraries and Council Customer Services Centres, or over the counter at Laycock St Theatre.
