Job Description Do you enjoy singing in the shower or humming a tune in the car? Why don’t you share your voice and expand your audience by joining the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus for your chance to sing some of the great works of classical music.

Following the integration of the Melbourne Chorale and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra into the newly named Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus, auditions are now being held in late November/early December for aspiring singers to join the Chorus for the 2008 program.

“We aim to expand the strength of the MSO Chorus by 50 new singers, and in particular we’re seeking tenors and basses. Male voices are always in demand”, said Chorus Master, Jonathan Grieves-Smith.

The Melbourne Chorale/MSO Chorus is an amateur choir that has regularly performed with the Orchestra for more than 40 years and has been conducted by some of the world’s finest musicians including Zubin Mehta, Sir Charles Mackerras, Markus Stenz and Edo de Waart. With more than 170 members, its choristers are committed to a high standard of artistic excellence. Its extensive repertoire covers traditional works by acclaimed composers such as Handel, Mozart and Beethoven through to new commissions.

In 2008 the MSO Chorus features in six different programs, performing some of the major highlights of the Orchestra’s season. These include Verdi’s Requiem, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, Enescu’s Vox Maris and the Australian premiere of Shostakovich’s Thirteenth Symphony Babi Yar under the baton of the MSO’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Oleg Caetani. Next year the MSO Chorus also collaborates with The Bach Choir, London and the Victorian Opera Chorus.

In addition to the social benefits of joining a choir, studies show there are mental and physical benefits derived from singing as demonstrated by a growing body of international research. According to scientists at the University of Frankfurt in Germany, research published in the US Journal of Behavioural Medicine stated that singing strengthens the immune system and also noticeably improved the singer’s mood.
