| Job Description |
The Genesian Theatre, located at its historic Kent Street, Sydney, premises has secured the rights to stage Andrew Lloyd Webber and Alan Ayckbourn’s hit West End show BY JEEVES.
The show based on the writings of English novelist P.G Wodehouse was originally a project which Tim Rice and Lloyd-Webber embarked on after the success of Jesus Christ Superstar in the 1970’s. Rice ultimately left the project to be replaced by rising playwright Alan Ayckbourn but the shows initial outing was not a success.
Never a pair to admit defeat easily, some twenty years later Lloyd-Webber and Ayckbourn decided to attack the show again ditching the entire book and all but two of the original songs. This time it was destined to be a critical and box-office success extending its run in the West End and ultimately making Broadway and touring America and Canada.
Director Roger Gimblett saw the new show in London in 1996 and loved it, “It was so non-Lloyd-Webber in that there were no mammoth special effects, plunging Chandeliers or huge orchestrations…it was just charming with a batty sense of humour and some of the most enchanting music I think he has written.” The setting is a village hall where the audience has ostensibly gathered for a Banjo Concert by Bertie Wooster only to discover that the Banjo has mysteriously disappeared. This provides an opportunity for Wooster, ably assisted by his Manservant Jeeves, to describe the antics of a particular Country-house weekend involving mistaken identities, half-baked schemes and the ultimate triumph of love. The show has a cast of ten and a small band and Gimblett said its themes and scale are ideally suited to the intimate 125 seat Genesian Theatre - a stage that has previously played host to such luminaries as Brian Brown, John Bell and Peter Carroll.
Auditions for the Sydney premiere, which runs weekend performances from 18 October, will be held in June and all roles are available including the leads of Jeeves and Wooster.
