AUDITION NOW FOR THE MSO CHORUS
‘This performance [Verdi’s Requiem] not only brought the day of wrath terrifyingly to life but also demonstrated the unnerving, overwhelming effect created when enormous choral forces are effectively harnessed. (The Australian, Eamonn Kelly, 7.4.08)
Excellent singers are warmly invited to audition to join the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus for their 2008/09 program.
Chorus Master Jonathan Grieves Smith said “We’re looking to expand our membership and develop ever-higher standards. We are looking for singers of all types but are particularly keen to encourage more men - tenors and low basses are especially welcome!”
As the profile of choirs has increased through shows such as ‘Battle of the Choirs’ and the ABC Choir of the Year Competition, there has been a surge of interest in joining choirs of all descriptions.
As Australia’s flag-ship Chorus, the MSO Chorus performs in concerts with the MSO and some of the world’s finest conductors including Zubin Mehta, Sir Charles Mackerras and Oleg Caetani. The Chorus also sings Chorus-only concerts, performing music drawn from 500 years of composition including specially-commissioned music from Australia’s finest composers such as Brett Dean and Paul Stanhope.
This year marked the Chorus’ international debut performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to great success in Kuala Lumpur with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. More national and international tours are very much in the pipe-line!
The MSO Chorus is an amateur chorus performing to professional standards. Its singers, who pay no membership fees, are committed to exacting standards and developing an ever-higher quality of artistic excellence. Membership is by audition and the regular rehearsal night is Monday in the MSO’s headquarters at the ABC on Southbank.
