A signature concert for Oleg Caetani in the Orchestra’s centenary
season, this program explores the seemingly contradictory musical
personalities of a giant of 20th century music. The Second Symphony,
with its mighty factory hooter bringing the chorus to its feet; the
ambiguous Ninth, often seen as a bitterly ironic response to the world
left behind by World War II; the anarchic satire of The Nose and the
sadness and anger of the Cello Concerto No. 2 – all are the work of a
man who has come to symbolise the plight of the creative artist in the
Soviet system.
